Statement of Intent: C’ville Urban Commune

A couple months ago we met with the Urban Commune Design Council to establish a time-line for the evolution of the (yet to be named) C’ville Commune.  The end goal is purchasing property by July 1st, 2010.  Our first deadline was to have a vision statement for the community by May 1st.  We had lengthy discussions with various folks about this vision statement: it would be multi-faceted, multi-discipline and multi-media.   It would embody the bredth and scope of the community we are creating.  It would inspire and resonate with people who shared the vision, calling them to action in our expanding core group.

And we still hope to create that document.  In the meantime, we realized that we’d need to postpone this more involved and creative document until we have more folks involved.  So we’ve created this basic Statement Of Intent to get things moving, and as a tool for organizing and expanding our working group.

We’ll be announcing a meeting for those interested in joining this project in the near future.  In the meantime we wanted to share this with y’all.  Let us know what you think!

Statement of Intent: C’ville Urban Commune

This is the working statement of intent for a new urban commune in Charlottesville, VA. It is a work in progress. It is meant to act as a temporary tool for organizing and will evolve and ultimately be replaced by a founding document.

Urban Evolution

We are transforming the urban environment into a sustainable habitat. This is measured along social, economic, ecological, political and spiritual lines.

Cooperative Social Ecology

We use non-hierarchical decision-making systems and structures. We are developing a communication culture based on honesty, openness, and kindness. We are fostering relationships based on trust, mutual support, and appreciation that lead to collective action for the benefit of all.

Economic Justice

We are creating an economic system that meets a wide range of human needs for those involved, while simultaneously seeking to eliminate the need to participate in oppressive economic systems.

A Hub of Community

We are creating a physical place where the community can gather to socialize, agitate, organize, and celebrate. It is also place for resource sharing that fosters a local, cooperative economy.

Solidarity

We are part of a global network of grassroots social movements working to create a sustainable and just human society. We seek to support, participate in, contribute to, and learn from this network wherever and whenever possible.

  1. Hey,
My name is Garrett Trent, and I work for the Hope Community Center. We are looking to be a connector within the Cville community and are looking to form partnerships with likeminded individuals/groups. I believe we can be of service to your organization through publicity for our Meet Your Neighbor Project. Please let me know if you’d be interested in meeting or shoot me an email. Thanks!
