Adopt-An-Activist!
We set out to transform ourselves, our community and the world by embodying, creating, and spreading models for sustainable urban community. To this end, we are helping facilitate the expansion of social and economic structures based on cooperation, sustainability, and justice.
How are we doing this?
- By supporting and developing sustainable urban living situations
- By developing local, organic food sources
- By fostering the social network of individuals and groups with similar values and vision
- By creating opportunities for people to reduce their dependence on federal reserve notes
There is no paid position for this work.
Existing organizations are specialized. We choose to engage in a variety of inter-related projects because we believe in an approach that integrates all aspects of life. It’s possible to do some of this work in exchange for payment, but hard to make a living within mainstream social and economic constructs.
Why us? After many years living at Twin Oaks Community in Central Virginia, followed by 2 years exploring other communities, cooperatives, and community-oriented projects in the US and in Europe, we bring a unique and valuable skill set. We’ve both had transformative experiences living in community; both with the nuts and bolts physical labor involved as well as the headier process and policy aspects. We are choosing to live simply and keep our expenses low so that we can more fully dedicate our time and energy to manifest this vision. We are committed to realizing this vision in collaboration with the local community of which we are a part, and to helping create similar opportunities for others. We believe our years of experience living and working in cooperative groups, and our extensive touring of these groups, gives us what we need to be successful.
Why now? The impending environmental crisis, the ongoing economic crisis, and the collective sense of isolation and alienation in the face of hardship call out for us to take action! The economic meltdown and worsening environmental situation is driving many people to apathy. In the face of these intense challenges, now is the perfect time to join together to strengthen and expand our collective resources, jump-starting the evolution of our urban environments into sustainable and joyful places.

We’re part of a small group of people in the world charting this new territory. We draw on support, ideas, feedback, and inspiration from others doing similar work, but that isn’t enough. Let us know what you think Share your own experiences that resonate with what we’re doing. Tell us we’re crazy! Cheer us on!

Love the blog but the white/grey on black background renders it nearly unreadable ( to my 45 yo eyes ). I know it looks sharp, but this color choice is generally considered extremely user-unfriendly for text heavy sites. Please consider a dark font on a light background.
